DC goes 10 days without a homicide under Trump executive order.
I don't know if this is a good thing, or a bad thing. Hell, maybe that will work out here in Oakland too. The crime is out of control out here.
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) – Nearly two weeks into President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in the District, violent crime numbers are trending down.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed to DC News Now that the city’s last recorded homicide was on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The drop comes as the President sends more National Guardsmen and federal agents into city streets with a focus on violent crime and immigration enforcement.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) touting new numbers on Friday, saying more than 700 arrests have been made since the start of the federal crackdown, including 36 immigration-related arrests on Thursday alone.
The President talked about those stats on Friday morning.
“D.C. was a hellhole, and now it’s safe. I hate to say this because it doesn’t sound very good, but there have been no murders in D.C. in the last week. That’s the first time anybody’s memory that you haven’t had a murder in a week,” Trump said.
D.C. crime statistics show a 7-day stretch without a homicide has also happened a few other times this year.
People DC News Now talked to on Friday said they think the increased law enforcement presence could be part of what’s behind the downward trend.
“I’m not sure if the two are connected, but I can see how something like violent crime would just go down off the strength of people not wanting to get caught up with unnecessary drama,” Ike Nwoye said.
Violence prevention organization Peace for DC says it takes time to establish real trends.
